Behind EPA rule rollbacks, Trump plans for a coal comeback

Energy Secretary Chris Wright, meanwhile, is working on a “market-based plan” on coal, according to reporting last week by Bloomberg. And Trump, last week in his speech before Congress, vowed to take “historic action to dramatically expand production of critical minerals and rare earths here in the USA.”

But many environmentalists say the new Trump administration will fail — just as the first Trump administration did — in its quest to revive coal.

“They tried to do this in the first Trump term and it did not work, and now the economics of coal are even worse,” Mary Anne Hitt, a West Virginia-based environmental activist and senior director of U.S. initiatives at Climate Imperative. “I don’t think they’ll succeed in this term.”
